Hotmail finally has allowed you to fully use POP to control your own e-mail. Unfortunately you have to upgrade to Hotmail plus. This cost $19.95 per year. While this is really annoying, for me its worth it because I’ve had a Hotmail address for years. If you pay for it you don’t have to use any hacks or anything, just configure your Apple mail client as follows.
1) If you have not done so already. Upgrade your account to Hotmail plus. http://get.live.com/mailplus/features
2) Open your Mail program. Select Preferences from the Mail menu.
2) Select the Accounts tab. And click the little “+” button at the bottom left of the window to add and account.
3) Enter your name, Hotmail E-mail address and password.
4)Set your Incoming mail server to pop3.live.com. Your username should be your full email address.
5) Outgoing Mail server should be set to smtp.live.com. All the SSL and Authentication boxes should be checked t.
Your ready to go. Enjoy checking your mail off-line.

This works pretty well, a few hang up though…..new hotmail is automatically downloaded via mac mail – but after I read/reply and make changes to my inbox, those changes are not sent back to WLM.
example: I can check 20 new msg’s in mac mail…then I sign into WLM via my browser and it shows that I still have 20 new messages….how do I get macmail to talk back to WLM – otherwise what good is this email client?

This configuration worked GREAT! Thank you for the valued post, as a new Mac user (formally a PC user all my life) I can use all the help and/or tips I can obtain. One thing is certain, I will NEVER go back to the PC world ruled by Billy Gates again.
Thanks!

this works for getting my mail, but it won’t send it. I’ve got it set up like in the example, and it recognizes the server, but the messages just stay in my Outbox. Any suggestions?

Have you upgraded to Hotmail Plus Live?
Also the outgoing mail server should be set to smtp.live.com. All the SSL and Authentication boxes should be checked.
